The award winning Paper Potter by Nether Wallop Trading is an ingeniously simple device to make biodegradable pots from strips of old newspaper. Say goodbye to plastic!
Designed as a solution to the perennial lack of seedling pots in spring, it also successfully deals with the piles of a household’s accumulating newspapers! Both pieces of the Paper Potter are turned from FSC certified oak, grown in managed woodlands.
The simplicity of the design enables you to make hundreds of pots in a very short time and once filled with compost, and the seed has germinated, there is no need to remove the plant – the entire pot should be planted in the ground. That way, the tiny little hair roots are not disturbed and there is a reservoir of moisture retained in the damp newspaper. The pot will break down naturally once it is in the soil.
Children love making paper pots and this innovative and simple gadget can be used to teach an invaluable lesson about sustainable living.
Cut dry newspaper into strips (8cm x 57cm approx) and ROLL loosely around the Paper Potter
Roughly FOLD over excess newspaper
Press and TWIST
Remove the pot and fill with compost – the Paper Potter will bio-degrade when transplanted to the garden.
Nether Wallop Trading design and develop innovative, eco-friendly kitchen and garden tools and gifts.
The idea for Nether Wallop Trading came about when, due to over-enthusiastic seed buying and planting typical of a new gardener, the founder was faced with the problem of not having enough pots for her seedlings. And like many gardeners, she was unwilling to discard the ‘spares’.
Keen to garden organically, to minimize environmental impact, and to use the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, she designed the Paper Potter, initially making it on a wood-turning lathe.
She created a tool which used up old newspapers by turning them into biodegradable pots which didn’t cost a penny and had the added bonus of saving her from carting stacks of newsprint to the recycling bins! The Paper Potter was the inspiration for starting up Nether Wallop Trading and, over the years, they have added many more innovative, beautifully crafted tools to their range.
Many of their products are based on traditional designs, sometimes adding a modern twist. Their wooden products are all made from sustainably managed (FSC) wood or from salvaged wood. All their products are rigorously tested before putting them on sale.
I have bought the big paper potter and love it! It is made from oak and has a lovely feel good factor as well as working really well. Have just made a supply of seed pots from newspaper. The potter base is designed to hold the pots securely in shape without any need for tape. Really pleased. Will be ordering the original one too and various other things! The potter arrived really quickly in the post and plastic free packagingSue
